The FDA will begin to issue guidance documents for nanotechnology.
Such documents will apply to companies whose products will be incorporating nanotechnology, including pharmaceutical firms, medical device makers and consumer products firms.
Not everyone is content with this state of affairs, however. A non-profit policy group, the International Center for Technology Assessment, is suing the FDA, calling for more oversight of nanotechnology.
The FDA currently treats products made with nanotechnology in the same way as other products, which means requiring companies to prove their safety and efficacy before allowing them to come to market. This may not be enough for product categories, such as cosmetics, foods and dietary supplements, which do not require proof of safety and efficacy to FDA standards before they are sold on the market. Such products could therefore carry unregulated nanotech concerns.
