Obesity and Children: The Next Generation

The obesity epidemic is rapidly affecting the next "seven generations," according to recent reports--impacting life expectancy.

(The Cincinnati Enquirer) -- "Within the next 10 years, an epidemic of obesity threatens to cut between two and five years from average U.S. life expectancy. For the first time in history, children may not live as long as their parents. It doesn't have to happen here -- if we act now. On March 22, the Enquirer Editorial Board called a summit of local and state leaders to grapple with a crisis we've been covering for seven months -- the explosive increase in children's obesity, inactivity and poor nutrition. But rather than focusing on how to stave off disease, the 50 health, education, insurance and public-policy leaders raised a more challenging question: Why doesn't our region commit to raising the healthiest kids in America? That's a goal that can unite us."
