Pallone named as chair of Congressional subcomittee on health

Rep. Frank J. Pallone Jr., D-N.J., was named to chair the Energy and Commerce subcommittee on health, one of the most powerful in Congress.

The subcommittee deals with all aspects of health care, including research on stem cells and pharmaceutical issues.

The subcommittee has sole jurisdiction over Medicaid, the Food and Drug Administration, the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control. It also shares jurisdiction of Medicare with the Ways and Means Committee.

Pallone said his top priorities would be to strengthen the State Children's Health Insurance Program, known in New Jersey as FamilyCare. The program provides health coverage to uninsured, low-income parents and guardians of children
