My brother is a lawyer, I don't need Prepaid Legal Services

It's amazing how easily people cheat themselves of something beneficial through their own mental excuses.

Of course I want to say something very direct but not in a critical or judging way.  It's simply that one of the amazing transformational experiences I have had as an independent associate with Prepaid Legal Services, Inc. is a rooting out of my own negativity.

In recent months I have seen how, despite all the psychological and intensive spiritual work I have done over the years, a kernel core of negativity remained.  No I don't want to interact with this person, no to that person - Jim Carey's "no" personality before he got to "Yes." (And Getting to Yes has always been one of my favorite books - I am good at getting to yes in negotiations, but what about getting to Yes inside?  Internally, the "no" predominated.  And thus I swatted away people, opportunities, possibilities.  But now have opened up, thanks to the myriad of positive associations I have made in this business community.)

So, a good friend just wrote:

hey there... my brother in law is a lawyer, so i have any legal needs taken
care of with him if i need it. but thanks!

Some people think that simply because they have a lawyer in the family, their legal needs are taken care of.  If your cousin is a doctor, would you give up your health insurance?

Rhetorical question.

I asked my friend:

What kind of law does is practice? Is he satisfied?

Could he write you a will, defend you in a motor vehicle case, defend you before the IRS, defend you in court, review your contracts, give you unlimited legal advice on any legal matters, and write unlimited demand letters for you?

There's more to this than meets the eye ... check it out.

I have a full law practice & this is a great business for me .. maybe you could pass the link along to him?

Anyway it's a combo of logic and recruiting.

But I think the doctor metaphor tells it all.  I am an attorney and one of my brothers is an attorney, but I certainly don't want to take care of my brother's legal affairs or have him handle mine! For one, it's a burden on each other's time.  Sure we can ask each other for advice and opinion in our respective areas, but I take responsibility for my own life and believe in hiring professionals to render professional advice where needed.  Plus, there is just no way a sibling should ask another for legal defense in case of an IRS audit or litigation (in my opinion) - would you ask a family member to spend 75-150 hours for you in court? Seriously .... do they have 2 weeks a month to devote exclusively to your lawsuit? Or even several hours to properly review and comment on your employment contract, or give you unlimited preventative legal advice?

"There's more to this than meets the eye ... check it out" simply means, take a look at the information presented in the Prepaid Legal plan.  I'm just the messenger, not the message. I'm not here to sell the membership or convince - simply to pass along the information that is available on the Prepaid Legal website and let you decide for yourself.

It's just so interesting how people's belief systems create filters, and get in the way of making clear decisions; how people tend to use language to erect blockades and barriers to letting real information filter through like sunlight in the forest of thoughts.  Clear decision-making comes from knowing the facts, not from prejudging or what we lawyers call "assuming a fact not in evidence."  With the right information, good decisions emerge.

Michael H. Cohen is an independent Associate with Prepaid Legal Services, Inc.

Prepaid Legal gives members access to professional legal counsel not only for traditional legal problems, but for everyday events such as buying a house or a car, creating a will, handling a problem with an insurance company, dealing with identity theft, and much more where legal review should be routine, but rarely is. These events can be among the most important events in a person's life, yet there is a tendency for them to take place without proper legal review. For Pre-Paid Legal members, access to legal counsel is only a toll-free phone call away.
