Swarming "smart dust" to explore space

Swarming "smart dust" could be used to explore space, according to engineers at the UK's National Astronomy Meeting.

The "dust" would be a tiny computer chip covered by a plastic sheath that can change shape when a voltage is applied, enabling it to be steered. The idea is to send smart dust, not people, to Mars.

Kurzweil in 2005 already brought to public attention the army's exploration of smart dust as a weapon.

I can't help being reminded of that wonderful story by Dr. Seuss, "Horton Hears a Who." The people of Whoville were crying out and Horton the Elephant heard their voice. Like Joan of Arc and many others, he was going to be 'caged and boiled' for his shamanistic experience. But it turns out that Whoville existed after all. Horton saved the day.

I'm sure that story had a big effect on me as I studied Reiki and other forms of energy healing and grew to know the complementary therapies where listening for something intuitively that may not be completely obvious on the physical level, becomes important.

Now science is catching on with nanotechnology. It seems we can create worlds this small, which means they can exist after all, and these devices will be our eyes and ears on Mars and then onto the rest of the galaxy.

But of course for a long while the smart dust will not have any emotional or spiritual intelligence - just the smarts to pass along information.

Still, its development credits the idea that everything is conscious, in one sense or another - intelligence pervades all, and even though some skeptics think human intelligence is the only game in town, we will now be breathing and sneezing out intelligence as smart dust develops.
