Wellness sanctuary

By Kamilla Hemandas
The fast-paced life of today has taken its toll on everyone's health. With the stress of the daily grind, plus the pollution around us and the processed fast food we have all grown accustomed to, it is comforting to know there is a place where we can seek advice to maintain optimum health. Amezcua, a sanctuary for health and wellness, recently opened right in the heart of Metro Manila and I couldn't be more grateful. At least I wouldn't have to brave long out of town trips whenever I needed to unwind, detox or simply have an awareness of the state of my personal health. Conveniently located along Katipunan Avenue, with a staff of competent doctors on board, Amezcua, is by far the very first urban medi-spa in the Philippines.

Managed by the gregarious Renu Gidoomal, who brings with her 20 years of expertise from the United Kingdom where she used to run her own alternative medicine clinic, Amezcua is clearly more than just the mediocre neighborhood spa that has been mushrooming across the metropolis. Aside from regular aesthetic pampering, it also provides a wide selection of medical screenings, treatments, blending the best of modern technology with effective traditional healing techniques. Eastern and western practices are combined and the holistic approach of mind and body integration is always considered.

On the medical side, it offers screenings for one's total health evaluation, like the Live Blood Cell Analysis, which is quite an interesting revelation as one can actually see the microscopic state of one's blood projected on a television monitor. Meridian Stress Management, Lymphatic Drainage, and Iridology diagnoses which are all alternative approaches to wellness are also offered and with certified doctors to guide you through the motions. Acupuncture and pain management are also a specialty of the spa which also offers nutritional advice as well as aromatherapy wraps for weight loss.

Clearly more than just a place to get a great foot spa or a shiatsu massage, it ups the ante on wellness as it also offers spa cuisine, belly-dancing and yoga classes for those who wish to unwind and recharge. Within its spacious state-of-the-art facilities one can opt to have a plethora of treatments. Renu Gidoomal highly recommends their colonic hydrotherapy, which, she swears, detoxes the body from the inside and enables the small intestine to absorb nutrients effectively to promote optimum health. She explained, "Even if we eat healthy and take all the vitamin supplements, if the body does not absorb it, what a waste! With colonic hydrotherapy we are assured that the intestines are doing their work!"

Exotic treatments like Green Coffee Cocoon, Sabai Stone Massage, and their signature AromaMoor Wrap are also said to take away the aches and pains caused by fatigue and stress. A wet and dry sauna for clients who just want to lie back is open to clients all day. They also have meditation "hall" constructed like a real bahay kubo of all indigenous materials, which sits right within its contrasting modern interior complex.

Their facial treatments provide an all-natural pampering experience as all their spa care products are made of all-natural botanicals with no dyes, perfumes, alcohol and other harsh chemicals that may irritate the skin. Their massages and aromatherapy body wraps are known to cleanse, tone and firm the skin, sculpt the body and boost the immune system and energy levels.

A perfect hangout for both men and women with discerning taste, without compromising nutrition, their café serves fresh juices, herbal teas, salads, sandwiches and pasta. Some of their facilities are also available for private functions, like birthdays and corporate seminars.

In the Philippines' bid to enter the world medical tourism market, Amezcua, owned by Quest Vacation International Singapore is an outstanding showcase of Filipino talent. Its team of massage therapists, doctors, nurses, physical therapists, and naturopaths are all world-class, service-oriented and nurtured by genuine home-grown gentleness.
