I had a dream … I know, Martin Luther King Day is tomorrow, and this is my psyche’s homage — about a spiritual crisscrossing of energies.

In this dream from last night, people were moving vertically in life, as along a chessboard.

We all have our goals; a pawn tries to become a Queen — a King, to fortify his Castle, and a bishop to advance diagonally while the Knight skips about town.

Simultaneously, in the dream, images from history were crisscrossing horizontally.

At one point, a black tank rolled across and plowed right through someone.

What was happening was that as people moved along the chessboard of their lives, their past lives and karmic history pushed right into them.

There is a scene in The Martian Chronicles (starring Rock Hudson as the chief astronaut) in which, in the final episode, the ambassador of the humans meets the ambassador of the Martians.  They build a friendship, and have a great dialogue, but when they try to shake hands, their hands pass through one another.  Each cannot see the cities and inhabitants of the others, because they are ghosts to one another.

So which one’s reality is real?  This is a variation on the old koan, am I am man dreaming of a butterfly or a butterfly dreaming I am a man?

In my dream, the ghosts of the past moved into the energies of the present, only as they did so it was not about haunting or being dragged into the past.  Rather there was a release and transformation.

Aaah.

Last night I attended a Krishnamurti dialogue.  One of the questions was whether memory serves us or simply drags us into our conditioning.  Someone there mentioned genocidal history, and presto, my unconscious served up a dream.  It seems the deep archetypes are impressed upon the grooves and have their own voice.

Last night’s inquiry was about what was meant by true freedom.  Can we accept our messy consciousness, and fully live within it, and what does Krishnamurti mean when he says the observer and the observed are one? Can love arise within the moment if we just release the stream of desire, expectation and reaction, and move intuitively in the present without letting past or future interfere?

I have a dream, it is universal and it moves me through the chessboard of life.  In truth we can move in many more surprising ways than vertically or horizontally – in fact we can lift right off the chessboard and move in multiple dimensions; and even on the chessboard, the dream moves the past through present so humans can release the sufferings of old and shape-shift into new possibilities.

This shape-shifting is the essence of my dream–a freedom and lightness in all the manifest and unmanifest dimensions of being.
